Erie Data Systems, LLC has announced the release of CaptionSeek, a closed-caption search engine built to assist those who are hard of hearing or deaf in exploring a surplus of accessible, wide-release video content.
In an effort to better design a tool that would fit their specific needs, Erie Data Systems worked with an internet-based focus group while designing CaptionSeek, allowing them to hone in on the two largest issues faced by hearing impaired Internet users: an inability to find videos with closed-captioning, and even further, videos with quality closed-captioning. CaptionSeek is the first search engine of its kind to acknowledge both of these issues.

“We are excited to bring this much-needed capability to the hard of hearing and deaf Internet users,” says Craig J. Stadler, CTO and founder of Erie Data Systems. “We will also be working with various support organizations to further develop this offering.”
CaptionSeek allows users to search through over one million videos by topic and captions, including current news, clips from all major providers, broadcast television, film, and even video games. An additional feature of CaptionSeek allows users to view similar videos with related captions. Users are given the ability to review captions to ensure the quality of their captions match expectations.

This release follows a previous venture in which Erie Data Systems developed a partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) earlier this year. With access to Exif-Search, an Erie Data Systems product that continuously crawls the internet for image metadata, NCMEC caseworkers were able to obtain additional information and photographs used to enhance current and future investigations. The development of CaptionSeek furthers Erie Data System’s commitment to utilizing unique technology for the benefit of communities both locally and worldwide.
