AWS Announced Amazon DocumentDB With MongoDB Compatibility

The world’s leading Cloud services company Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of a fully-managed document database (DocumentDB) service for MongoDB workloads, called Amazon DocumentDB. As a document database, Amazon DocumentDB makes it easy to store, query, and index JSON data.

What is Amazon DocumentDB?

Amazon DocumentDB is a non-relational /NoSQL database service designed specifically to manage MongoDB workloads at scale. AWS has decoupled storage and compute capabilities to ensure both operations are managed and scaled independently. This would allow the AWS users to increase the Document DB read capacity to millions of requests per second by adding up to 15 low latency read replicas in minutes, regardless of the size of your data.

Currently, Amazon DocumentDB supports MongoDB workloads as it’s easy to store, query, and index JSON data. AWS users can leverage AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) to migrate DocumentDB in MongoDB setups, in addition to using the command-line utilities like mongodump and mongorestore.AWS DevOps teams recommend using the Amazon DocumentDB Index Tool to create indexes in Amazon DocumentDB before beginning any kind of migration.

Since Amazon DocumentDB is designed on JSON workflows, it makes data exchange and transition to modern data centers intuitive, fast and scalable, thereby enhancing the overall productivity of the service.
