Serverless Startup Thundra Announces Release of “Thundra Layers” Leveraging AWS Lambda
Newly Launched Startup Spins out of Atlassian-Acquired, Incident-Management Company Opsgenie and Achieves Advanced Technology Partner Status with AWS.
Thundra, the newly launched observability company for serverless environments, announced the release of Thundra Layers for AWS Lambda. The company also announced it has achieved Advanced Technology Partner status in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN).

A custom runtime implemented on top of the new AWS Runtime API feature, Thundra Layers reduces development and deployment time for software developers adding observability to their applications, even across multiple AWS Lambda functions and accounts.

With Thundra Layers for AWS Lambda AWS’s “serverless” computing service—customers don’t need to download, install, and manually set up Thundra to achieve full serverless observability of AWS Lambda. Instead, they can simply select the Thundra Layer option within AWS Lambda, set a few configuration options, and immediately start monitoring their serverless applications.
Thundra is a new, independent startup that spun out of OpsGenie, an IT-operations company focused on incident management that was acquired by Atlassian earlier this year. OpsGenie board members Neeraj Agrawal, a Battery Ventures general partner, and Izzy Azeri, co-founder of Stackdriver (acquired by Google Cloud Platform) and mabl, a machine-learning, test- automation startup, now serve on Thundra’s board. OpsGenie Chief Executive Berkay Mollamustafaoğlu is Thundra’s board chairman.

Software is considered serverless when a developer writes code and deploys it onto a platform that takes care of everything required to run the software, including setting up, deploying, scaling, and operating servers, containers, operating systems and other infrastructure. AWS Lambda is one of the most popular serverless computing solutions in the market as organizations rush to adopt this new approach to building applications more quickly and efficiently. In recognition of this, Thundra recently passed rigorous technical and architectural assessments to achieve APN Advanced Technology Partner status. This achievement provides additional confidence to AWS customers in Thundra’s ability to support and deliver reliable and secure enterprise serverless monitoring capabilities.
“Serverless is being rapidly adopted by the enterprise, with some sources indicating that 46 percent of IT decision makers are now using or evaluating the technologyi,” said Serkan Özal, Thundra’s founder and chief technology officer. ”But the key to the success of these projects will, in large part, be contingent upon each team’s ability to implement and use observability technology to quickly pinpoint critical performance issues, course-correct and solve them without guesswork.”
