AiThority Interview with Matthew Sappern, CEO at PeriGen
Hi, Matt, please tell us about your role and the team / technology you handle at PeriGen. How did you reach here?
I am the CEO of PeriGen. I came here from an EMR company because I knew there was more that technology could deliver to clinical care than was happening in the EMR space at the time.

How did your role evolve through the pandemic months? How did your previous experiences with technology management help you scale your efforts and meet unprecedented challenges?
PeriGen was challenged by the pandemic in that our business requires consultative meetings to design, educate and measure the efficacy of our software. Our clinical and technical leads were able to create virtual programs for all of these requirements by creating personalities or avatars that operated on tablets, which we then shipped to our customers. We not only gained some efficiencies, but our customers also found this remote solution to be very efficient.
What is PeriGen and how do you leverage AI and Cloud computing capabilities to transform childbirth technology?
PeriGen is a company that creates and sells software to enhance clinical efficiency and standardization of care during childbirth.
PeriGen software uses proprietary AI methods to continuously analyze fetal heart rate patterns and labor progression. It consolidates critical data into a single overview showing patients’ course with respect to maternal vital signs, fetal status, and labor progression.
Our software can track hundreds of patients across multiple sites, continuously prioritizing them according to the degree and duration of abnormality and notifying clinicians when they exceed expected norms. The technology works in a consistent and tireless fashion. Cloud deployments of PeriGen tools, specifically in health systems’ Azure environments, accelerate deployment and reduce overall IT overhead.

Childbirth and post-natal complications are critical aspects of healthcare services. How does PeriGen use AI to ensure safety in this area?
We agree! Frustratingly, approximately half of the catastrophic complications in childbirth are preventable. Most of these preventable complications are related to delayed recognition and/or intervention. Numerous unavoidable human factors contribute to this problem, including subjective diagnoses, with evolution over many hours, clinician fatigue during nighttime shifts, and unpredictable workloads that can suddenly result in understaffing. The intelligent analytics and specialized displays help the clinical user see if a patent is progressing within an accepted safe zone or approaching a hazardous zone. Furthermore, this analysis is available at the bedside and presented to other clinicians in the unit and/or off site. Many PeriGen customers enhance this protection through deploying centralized remote monitoring of multiple facilities at once, as well as alerts being forwarded to providers on a mobile platform.
As the CEO of an AI-native health tech service provider, how do you keep your own company protected from security risks? What kind of tools and solutions do you currently use to combat security risks?
We employ a number of strategies to insulate our solutions from security risks, and we work with health systems’ teams to fit their security paradigms as well. I’d prefer to not discuss our approach beyond that.
