Colombian Software Companies Head To Guadalajara To Explore Business Opportunities In The Mexican Market

Colombian software companies went on a business mission to Guadalajara, the Silicon Valley of Mexico, to strengthen ties with the local network of new technology businesses and to explore business opportunities. These included software companies such as Grupo Bien Pensado, Fluid Attacks, Software Estratégico, ReconoSER ID, Comforce, AIA TIC, Pensemos and Smart Data and Automation.

US businesses have invested US $45 million in Colombian software services in the first quarter of 2020, while Canada reached US $220,000. Colombia is considered a land of opportunities for software companies. One success story is Fluid Attacks, a firm with offices in San Francisco and North Carolina which works on cybersecurity services. Vladimir Villa, the CEO of Fluid Attacks highlighted that “many opportunities are opening up for us at this juncture because companies are increasingly migrating towards digital, at an even higher speed than before, so cybersecurity has become a fundamental issue ”. In 2021,  Colombian exports to the American market accounted for a total of US $300 million. US $150.6 of the total were derived from business process outsourcing (BPO), software services made up US $35.5 million, a further US $106.5 million came from audiovisual production, and US $400,000 from the video games industry.

Another successful example in Colombia is Sigma Studios, an American company that offers software development, among other types of technological solutions. Santiago Echeverri, Director of Operations, indicated that “thanks to our marketing strategies and our participation in ProColombia’s Macro Wheel 80, we have added three new clients since the start of the COVID-19 crisis”.

Mexico is considered one of the top ten priority markets for the Colombian software industry, which has some 500 export-oriented companies. This Latin American country has significant needs for software services in different sectors such as health, finance, logistics, cybersecurity and e-commerce, which Colombian companies can respond to with tailored and innovative solutions.

The companies that took part in the Guadalajara business mission were accompanied by ProColombia, the Embassy of Colombia in Mexico,  Fedesoft, the Colombian Industry Association with over 30 years of experience and near 700 affiliated companies, and Ruta N, the business and innovation centre of Medellin and Antoquia, that is dedicated to aiding technology companies that provide services for the population, in the education, health and finance sectors, and renewable energy solutions, among other activities.

The event was recognized as an ideal opportunity for the Colombian delegation to raise awareness among the Mexican business community of all the benefits that Colombia has to offer, such as a solid network of 4.0 business accelerators, investment funds and technology parks. Colombia also offers high quality standards when it comes to talent, dynamic local demand, and access to markets throughout the region, including the US.

On November 23rd, there was an academic event for all companies, both Colombian and Mexican. Fedesoft also participated to demonstrate the value of the Colombian Software and IT services sector, and Ruta N to raise awareness of the services offered. There was also time for one to one meetings so that the Colombian companies taking part could present their services to their Mexican counterparts. On November 24th, Colombian companies visited Mexican companies and associations from across the sector to better understand what is being done in Guadalajara to develop Industry 4.0. The aim is to gain a greater understanding of the Mexican market to be in a better position to propose solutions tailored to the country’s needs.

Fedesoft, the Colombian Federation of the Software and Related Information Technology Industry, supported this initiative to position Colombia as a world-class technology supplier, and thereby contributed to the overall goal to transform the software industry, so that by 2025 it will represent 5% of the national GDP.

In order to promote digital entrepreneurship and the contributions that it can make to economic recovery, the Colombian government has also created the Apps.co program, sponsored by the public agency Innpulsa.
