New Book by AI Expert Focuses on Computers Exceeding Human Intelligence

Computers that are more intelligent than humans are not only possible, but inevitable and will be here sooner than most people think, according to the new book written by Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert Charles Simon.

Will Computers Revolt: Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence predicts that in just a few years, computers will become the dominant intelligence on our planet, ushering in a technological juggernaut that, to some extent, has already begun.

To get there, however, Simon argues that AI must be able to develop an understanding of the real world. Noting that most AI programs have been developed to solve specific problems, he contends, “Since they have no real world context, I believe Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – the ability of any intelligent agent to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human can – will necessarily emerge within the context of robotics, which is the only technology based on real-world interactions. It will then be transferred to most other areas of computation.”

Using numerous examples and a logical, easy-to-read approach, Will Computers Revolt goes on to discuss how such “genius” machines will lead to options and opportunities for how humans should prepare for and coexist with them. Simon warns that only with a full understanding of how machine intelligence must necessarily be different than human intelligence, though, “can we predict future pitfalls and determine how to avoid them.”

Originally written by Simon in the 1980s as a companion piece to the Brain Simulator software he developed, Will Computers Revolt: Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence has been updated over the years as many of the original assumptions and speculations were affirmed and are now recognized as scientifically factual.

The book itself is divided into four distinct parts:

  • Section One presents the overall case for intelligent, thinking machines being not only possible, but inevitable;
  • Section Two offers a model of the capabilities that a system needs in order to appear intelligent and the behaviors we can expect such a system to exhibit;
  • Section Three describes the software being developed to create intelligent behaviors and demonstrates the feasibility of creating minds in machines; and
  • Section Four examines predictions on how intelligence will exist in future machines and what we might do to coexist with them.

Advance reviews of Will Computers Revolt: Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence have been overwhelmingly positive. Literary critic Divine Zape calls the book “a must-read warning to humanity and scientists that is meticulously researched and logically presented,” while reviewer Lily Andrews calls it “a scientifically sound resource that is a must-read for techno-savvy readers.”

Earlier this year, Simon published Brain Simulator II: The Guide for Creating Artificial General Intelligence. The companion to his ground-breaking Brain Simulator II software, the book enables anyone with an interest in AI to experiment with diverse AI algorithms in order to create an end-to-end AGI system with modules for vision, hearing, robotic control, learning, internal modeling, planning, imagination, and forethought.
