AI Image Creation Goes Mainstream with Latest App Rollouts from Lightricks

Lightricks, the company behind the popular photo and video editing apps Photoleap, Facetune, Videoleap and Motionleap, has announced a new text-to-image AI feature for its suite of applications. As of late last week, new versions of both Photoleap (iOS only) and Motionleap (iOS and Android) support the ability to generate visuals from scratch, simply by describing what you want to see into a text prompt.

Over the past year or so, AI code bases such as DALL-E 2 have amazed tech aficionados with their ability to take imaginative descriptions and turn them into original images, but until last week, these capabilities had yet to be integrated into a mobile interface that then allows users to implement edits.

To put it simply, text-to-image AI involves using natural language processing (NLP), informed by a neural network, to generate images from textual descriptions. For example, if you were to input the description “a group of people playing soccer on a sunny day,” the AI would generate an image of exactly that – or at least, that would be the intention.

In order to create such a system, developers need a large dataset of images and their corresponding text descriptions. Once the neural network has been trained on this dataset, it can then generate images based on new captions it is given. Of course, training a neural network is no easy feat, and it can often take months or even years to achieve the level of accuracy required for commercial use.

Prior to Lightricks’s release, only a handful of open-source companies have operated in this space, and while their text-to-image AI offerings are certainly impressive, they lack accessibility for the everyday user. With Lightricks’s apps, it’s now possible to render new visual elements using the text-to-image AI, and then add filters and stickers, adjust color and contrast and even motion, all within the handy mobile app interfaces that visual content creators are already using.

“AI technology has proven its powerful capabilities when it comes to content creation” said Lightricks CEO Zeev Farbman in a statement. “The implementation of the Text to Image feature directly within our apps opens an entire realm of possibilities for our users, giving them limitless opportunities for incredible content creation.”

Not only does Lightricks’s new feature have the potential to revolutionize the creative industry, but it could also have a significant impact on other industries that rely heavily on image generation.

For example, consider the field of advertising. Currently, the process of creating an ad typically involves a team of people including copywriters, graphic designers, and photographers. However, with the advent of AI-generated images, it’s possible that this process could be streamlined by removing the need for costly photoshoots and instead relying on AI to generate the necessary images.

Of course, it’s still early days for Lightricks’s new text-to-image feature, and it remains to be seen just what types of images users will be able to come up with. Nevertheless, it’s an exciting development in the world of AI, and one that is sure to have a major impact on a wide range of industries in the years to come.

With 547 million installs and 29 million active monthly users, as of reports from nearly a year ago, Lightrick’s suite of applications is already among the most popular in the world. As a result, there’s no denying the award-winning app developer is a major driver of the creator economy, with its products used by everyone from professional photographers and videographers to amateur enthusiasts.
