Storyly Introduces Industry-Leading Features in a Move to Help Eliminate Technological Barriers in the Mobile Ecosystem
Storyly, the user engagement platform that embeds full-screen, interactive, and immersive Stories in mobile apps and websites, has announced new features to increase digital accessibility within its designs for those with visual impairment.
Research has shown that 73% of potentially disabled customers experience barriers on more than a quarter of websites visited and in fact, 4.3 million disabled online shoppers click away from inaccessible websites.
To help lift these technological barriers, and as part of Storyly’s mission to create a mobile ecosystem that meets the needs of all, it has added new developments including:
New description fields enabling context for screen readers – Storyly automatically enables screen reader technologies to read the metadata such as Story group order, Story group titles, seen/unseen status, and pinned Story groups. By including these descriptions, the end-user utilising a screen reader is able to have a better context of the Story content, and can more easily navigate to the Stories that interest them.

Screen readers will also be able to narrate action buttons such as ‘share’ and ‘close,’ navigation buttons such as ‘next’ and ‘previous’ as well as Call-to-Actions and their titles such as ‘swipe-up’ and ‘buy now.’
Alt text helping screen readers convey the Story experience – The new accessibility features allow creators to enter alternative text for the screen reader to use to describe the images used within the Story, making a difference to users who need accessibility features to enjoy Story content.

To enable the accessibility setting on their mobile device, users of iOS simply need to activate the VoiceOver function and for Android users, the TalkBack function. The Storyly alt text and descriptions are readable by either program.
Once enabled, autoplay is switched off for Stories, ensuring users have complete control over the pace at which content is presented. A single tap prompts the screen reader to describe the context, content, and navigation of the Story, while a double tap will perform actions such as swiping up, clicking through and advancing to the next Story.
