Microsoft’s New Acquisition Boosts AI ML-Based Java Ecosystem

Microsoft has acquired Java and OpenJDK service provider, jClarity. This is the second Microsoft Azure-centric acquisition for Microsoft. In January, the Company had acquired Citus Data to reaffirm their “commitment to Open Source and accelerating Azure PostgreSQL performance and scale.”

Founded in 2012, jClarity builds machine learning-based Software Performance Analytics and Tuning solutions for Java-centric Cloud and Desktop environments. Currently, jClarity provides commercial support for AdoptOpenJDK binaries, the drop-in replacement for Oracle’s Java/JDK.

jClarity’s Java Expertise to Add Muscle to Azure

In their official blog, Microsoft announced jClarity’s role as a Support platform from Open source. jClarity will be driving increased performance for Java workloads on Azure.

John Montgomery, Corporate Vice President of Program Management for Developer Tools and Services, at Microsoft said,

In the last few years, Microsoft’s usage of Java has grown and now includes multiple large-scale deployments, such as Azure HDInsight and Minecraft. Additionally, Microsoft customers like Adobe, Daimler and Société Générale have brought their Java production workloads to Azure. With more than half of compute workloads running on Linux, Azure has become a great platform for open source, and that certainly includes Java.

jClarity provides software performance analytics and tuning, driven by Machine Learning. Designed specifically for Java-based Cloud environments, their performance diagnostic engine and machine learning algorithm software simplifies Performance Analysis and Monitoring in a complex IT Cloud infrastructure.

jClarity’s Product development team has industry-recognized Java champions and data scientists with proven expertise in data-driven Java Virtual Machine (JVM) optimizations. Microsoft will deeply benefit from the jClarity ML team, bringing advanced-level Azure workload management on the Java platform.

John added, “At Microsoft, we strongly believe that we can do more for our customers by working alongside the Java community. The jClarity team, with the backing of Microsoft, will continue to collaborate with the OpenJDK Community and the Java ecosystem to foster the progress of the platform.”

Before this acquisition, Microsoft had forged their sponsorship-centric relationship with jClarity in 2018. In June 2018, Microsoft had sponsored the AdoptOpenJDK project to help build binaries of OpenJDK for different platforms, including Linux and Windows. With a new identity, the jClarity team would work at Microsoft to make Azure a better platform for Java customers, and internal teams.
