In my role as the Chief Technology Officer of a pioneering digital health company, I am continually exposed to discussions regarding the benefits—and the fears—that surround AI’s role in healthcare.

One of the primary reasons healthcare providers hesitate to integrate AI into patient care stems from the perceived lack of control over the information that AI provides to patients. Those concerns are not unfounded. It’s crucial to recognize that generic AI solutions that have been successful for consumers—or in other sectors like sales or manufacturing—cannot simply be retrofitted to meet the rigorous and ethical needs of healthcare.

It’s therefore our responsibility as tech leaders to create AI solutions tailored to the unique needs and challenges of the healthcare industry to ensure accuracy and accountability for patients, healthcare providers, pharma, and other stakeholders. I believe the cornerstone of successful AI implementation in healthcare is rooted in three fundamental principles: harnessing good data, enforcing responsible AI practices, and mitigating AI-driven hallucinations.

Good Data for Responsible AI Solutions

Data lies at the heart of AI’s efficacy—but not just any data. Quality and specificity are paramount. To ensure accurate outcomes, it’s imperative to train AI models with domain-specific data. Generic datasets may yield generic results, but in healthcare, accuracy is non-negotiable. By focusing on data aggregated from sources such as anonymized patient-provider interactions or through tracking the intricate web of patient journeys over several years, we can fine-tune AI algorithms to comprehend and cater to the unique needs of individual patients. We all know the classic machine learning saying, “garbage in, garbage out.” We must instead work toward precise, relevant data inputs—those are the seeds from which robust AI solutions grow.

Responsible AI, however, serves to enhance this connection rather than undermine it. AI for healthcare must be wrapped with technology that embodies ethical and compassionate principles. An effective health AI solution must be equipped to recognize when a user’s (i.e.: patient’s) safety is compromised, automatically and promptly escalating the conversation from the chatbot to a live person or guiding the person to an appropriate hotline or hospital department. This not only ensures patient safety but also strengthens trust between patients, providers, and the technology platform. Responsible AI is not just about providing accurate answers; it’s about understanding and addressing the user’s unique context and directing them accordingly.

Conquering AI-Driven Hallucinations

While AI systems are not influenced by human factors such as fatigue, emotional distractions, or memory loss, they can still be incorrect.

All AI systems encounter moments of uncertainty, leading to AI-driven ‘hallucinations’—responses based on extrapolated or misunderstood data. To prevent these hallucinations, a comprehensive system of cross-check elements and a well-defined set of rules are essential for health AI. By developing a set system for data validation and verification, we can enhance AI’s reliability, preventing it from steering off-course in the absence of a definitive answer. While many developers are investing in technology to reduce hallucinations, including sophisticated and creative algorithms, they likely cannot be completely eliminated. For these reasons, a collaborative approach between AI, human health and tech experts ensures the fusion of data-driven insights and human intuition

The journey to integrating AI into healthcare is complex, especially while ensuring compliance with HIPAA and GDPR regulations. However there is tremendous potential in the use of AI to support patients and health providers alike—whether it be accurately answering questions, providing information about treatment options and clinical trials, reading and summarizing medical documents, and escalating conversations to a live professional when needed. Throughout all of these applications responsibility is paramount. The speed of AI must never compromise the accuracy and the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship, data, and privacy.
