WitnessAI’s Approach to Safeguarding GenAI Models

What is The News About?

The business world is keen on these kinds of controls because, although they are cautiously excited about the productivity-boosting potential of generative AI, they are worried about the tech’s limitations. According to a survey conducted by IBM, 51% of CEOs are filling positions connected to generative AI that were not there before this year. Still, according to a Riskonnect poll, just 9% of businesses are ready to handle risks associated with generative AI, including privacy and IP concerns.

WitnessAI’s technology applies regulations and protections that mitigate risk by intercepting interaction between employees and their employer’s bespoke generative AI models. These models are not API-gated like OpenAI’s GPT-4, but rather similar to Meta’s Llama 3.

Why Is It Important?

WitnessAI offers a variety of modules for sale, each designed to address a specific threat posed by generative AI. One allows businesses to set policies that prohibit employees from specific teams from abusing generative AI-powered products (such as asking for pre-release earnings reports or copying and pasting internal codebases). An additional one removes confidential and proprietary information from the model prompts and puts measures in place to protect models from assaults that could cause them to deviate from their script.

From a privacy standpoint, though, WitnessAI presents a challenge: Before data reaches a model, it must first transit via its platform. Even more so, the company provides tools to track the models workers use, the queries they pose to the models, and the answers they receive. However, it may bring about new privacy concerns.

When asked about WitnessAI’s privacy policy, Caccia stated that the platform is encrypted and “isolated” to keep customer details hidden. Maybe that will put consumers’ minds at ease. Workers concerned about WitnessAI’s platform’s spying capabilities have a more difficult decision to make.

No matter the rationale, surveys reveal that employees dislike and think it lowers morale when their workplace activities are watched. A third of people who took part in a Forbes survey indicated they would think about quitting their jobs if their boss tracked all of their messages and online activities.

A pipeline of 25 early corporate users in its proof-of-concept phase attests to Caccia’s assertion that interest in WitnessAI’s platform has been and continues to be high. (It won’t be released to the public until the third quarter.) Additionally, WitnessAI has received $27.5 million from GV, Google’s corporate venture arm, and Ballistic Ventures, the incubator that initially supported the company.

With this infusion of capital, WitnessAI hopes to double its current staff size from 18 to 40 by year’s end. To compete with other startups like CalypsoAI and big giants like AWS, Google, and Salesforce in the emerging market for model compliance and governance solutions, WitnessAI will need to expand its business.
