Asurion Expands Governed AI Automation Across Its Tax Team With Savant
Tax professionals build and run their own workflow agents with documented logic, repeatable execution, and results traceable to source data.
Savant Labs announced that Asurion, a provider of device support and repair services, is using Savant to expand governed AI automation across its tax team.
Automation at Asurion previously depended on a small number of specialists. The monthly sales tax return process relied on one person’s knowledge, while value-added tax (VAT) reconciliation and foreign entity review remained largely manual. The company needed to put automation in more hands while ensuring results could be reproduced, explained and traced to their source.

“If I can’t reliably reproduce the results, then it’s not worthwhile. I can’t hand that to an auditor or feel confident in the results,” said Dave Johnson, Director of International Tax at Asurion.
Broader Ownership, Repeatable Results
With Savant, tax professionals build, run and maintain their own workflow agents. Business logic is documented automatically, and an AI copilot helps users adapt processes as requirements change. Each run records execution steps, outputs and source files to support review and audit.

A tax director who had found the previous automation tool too complex now maintains her own workflow agents. Processes Johnson previously managed have moved to the team members who use them.
“And they were able to build up their knowledge based on the documentation that’s sitting right in the workflow,” said Johnson.
Results Across Tax Operations
Asurion reports the following results:
– Broader process ownership: multiple team members now run the monthly tax processes, reducing reliance on individual specialists.
– More than $20,000 in annual value-added tax recovery from one process: matching rules reconcile transactions the team previously could not match, with analysts now handling work previously performed by managers.
– Streamlined foreign entity review: workflow agents aggregate adjustments, compare prior periods and flag variances for review.
– Audit-ready reconciliations: the team can reconcile files that were too large to open in Excel and provide the results directly to auditors.
– More team capacity: automation has freed capacity that Asurion estimates would otherwise have required additional hiring.
“Tax teams need confidence in the work, regardless of who runs the process,” said Chitrang Shah, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Savant Labs. “Asurion shows what becomes possible when the people closest to the work can own the automation, with the controls to stand behind the results.”
Asurion plans to extend automation to additional tax processes and countries, and is working toward direct connections with its tax software.
The announcement is part of a series leading up to general availability of the Savant AI Control Layer, built for finance teams to use their choice of AI models within governed workflow agents, with repeatable execution, human approvals and audit trails.
