Innovatrics’ Breakthrough Algorithm Achieves Sensor Miniaturization and Is Adopted by MoriX into Its Biometric Smart Card
Innovatrics’ Small Area Matcher Algorithm Leverages Deep Learning and Convoluted Neural Networks Instead of Traditional Minutiae Points to Perform Accurate Matching and Identification Even on Small Fractions of Fingerprints.
Innovatrics, the global leader in multimodal biometric technology, announced that its small area matcher algorithm has been implemented by MoriX Co., Ltd., a worldwide pioneer in fingerprint sensor technology.
Together, the companies have launched the world’s first working model of a smart card with a fingerprint authentication on a card. The proprietary fingerprint algorithm takes less than one second to complete incredibly accurate authentication.

Commenting on the success of the partnership, Innovatrics CEO Jan Lunter, explains: “Achieving sensor miniaturization in traditional fingerprint matching required a novel approach. Our algorithm is able to compare a user’s fingerprint to a template stored in a card in record time on the stock 100 MHz ARM M4 MCU. The Innovatrics small area matcher algorithm can be used in virtually any application where small scale fingerprint sensors (optical or ultrasonic) and constrained hardware options are required.”
The combination of MoriX sensor technology and Innovatrics’ advanced algorithm makes it possible for the smart card to utilize the current, as little as 4mA, provided by the contactless terminal to power all the necessary functions. MoriX has achieved an important breakthrough by producing a fingerprint sensor thin enough to be embedded in a smart card, with thickness of just 0.76 mm and the size of 8 by 8 mm with a resolution of 160 x 160 pixels.
Morihiko Kubota, CEO of MoriX, adds: “We are proud to be able to produce such a thin and lightweight sensor that can be incorporated into standard-sized contactless cards without any need for internal power supply.”
With the advent of small and cost-effective fingerprint sensors, Innovatrics’ small area matcher algorithm allows for highly-efficient and accurate authentication in embedded use cases, including IoT devices, door locks, automotive sensors, and smartphones.
Innovatrics is an independent, trusted partner for biometric identity management technology. To date, the company has successfully completed over 500 projects in 80 countries, with over a billion people having been biometrically processed using Innovatrics software.
