BharatGPT group—supported by Reliance Industries, owned by Mukesh Ambani, and the best engineering colleges in India—plans to launch its first ChatGPT-style service, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to develop its own artificial intelligence (AI).

A preliminary view of the concept was presented during a recent technology conference in Mumbai by the partnership, which includes eight IITs and Reliance. Hanooman, the model, showed a motorbike repairman speaking Tamil to the AI bot, a banker speaking Hindi, and a developer from Hyderabad writing code to the tool.

The approach will be implemented in four domains—education, healthcare, financial services, and governance—and eleven local languages.

During the annual Nasscom IT industry conference, Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, was quoted by Bloomberg as claiming that the model ‘Hanooman’ will also include speech-to-text capabilities, making it much more user-friendly.

It is worth mentioning that similar open-sourced AI models tailored to the country are being developed by other startups, such as Krutrim and Sarvam, with support from well-known VC firms like Lightspeed Venture Partners and the fund of billionaire Vinod Khosla.

According to the article, Reliance Jio intends to construct bespoke models for certain purposes. The 450 million customers that make up the telecom-to-retail conglomerate’s network will be able to use artificial intelligence on the “Jio Brain” platform.
