Mirantis will contribute open source code and expertise to financial-services-led FINOS initiatives involving cloud-native infrastructure, high-performance computing and AI. One of the first opportunities is supporting 5-Spot, an open source project led by RBC Capital Markets that uses k0smotron, a core component of the open source k0rdent project.

Also, RBC Capital Markets, and in particular Erick Bourgeois, distinguished technologist, were design partners in the ideation and early development of k0rdent, the open source cluster lifecycle project to which Mirantis is the leading contributor.

“Financial institutions face enormous compute requirements, strict regulatory obligations and growing pressure to adopt cloud-native infrastructure and AI without sacrificing control,” said William Rizzo, field chief technology officer, Mirantis. “Mirantis is joining FINOS to contribute to the standardized, open technologies the industry is building for AI workloads and to help financial institutions turn those priorities into practical, production-ready infrastructure.”

Supporting the 5-Spot Project

The 5-Spot project, which originated within RBC Capital Markets, is a Kubernetes-native machine scheduler that provisions and releases physical machines according to defined schedules and workload requirements. It applies declarative, policy-driven automation to bare-metal infrastructure, enabling organizations to treat physical compute resources with the same operational discipline used for cloud infrastructure.

Mirantis’ role is to support and contribute to the RBC-led initiative through its expertise in k0rdent, k0smotron, Kubernetes and bare-metal lifecycle management.

“5-Spot grew from a real infrastructure requirement within financial services: making compute capacity available when workloads need it without leaving valuable resources idle during predictable periods of lower demand,” said Bourgeois. “Working through FINOS gives the broader financial services community an opportunity to contribute to the project and apply the approach to shared infrastructure challenges. Mirantis brings relevant Kubernetes and platform engineering expertise that can help support that community-driven development.”
