Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) with FIPS Validated Cryptography for Edge Computing Environments

Allegro Software, a leading supplier of security and connectivity software for the Internet of Things (IoT), announced JavaÔ Cryptography Extension (JCE) support for the Allegro Cryptography Engine (ACE) FIPS validated cryptography module. This addition combines the performance and scalability of ACE with the Java Cryptography Architecture (JCA) provider framework for utilizing cryptographic algorithms in Java applications. Allegro’s FIPS validated cryptography module is ideally suited for resource constrained run-time environments and is pre-integrated with the Allegro EdgeAgent Suite of security and connectivity software toolkits. ACE, along with the complete EdgeAgent Suite of toolkits are delivered as ANSI-C source and can be used to quickly build customized IoT applications and production-ready IoT edge solutions.

Since Java’s initial release in 1996, the utilization of Java and breadth of application deployments has grown significantly. Java has more recently found its way into the IoT marketplace and related edge computing deployments for collecting, correlating, and securing data. Using Java typically requires more resources than are available in deeply embedded IoT devices like sensor arrays, and IoT edge computing platforms are also more resource limited than their enterprise counterparts.Allegro’s JCE interface combines the performance and scalability of ACE running in the native platform environment with an advanced cryptography provider interface integrated into the JCA. Engineered to take advantage of the Java standards-based interface, the Allegro JCE is a drop-in replacement for standard or third-party cryptography providers that uses limited resources, provides improved performance and meets industry requirements for FIPS validation.
