AI vs. Human Ingenuity: Why AI is Not Yet Ready to Replace Creativity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most exciting technologies right now. AI tools such as ChatGPT and DALL-E have attracted mainstream media for many reasons, from passing exams to generating alarmingly accurate imagery. Tapping further into the uncanny, AI tooling has been paired with decentralized technologies and smart contracts to power non-playable characters (NPCs).

This blend of innovative technologies delivers surprising results. Dubbed ‘Generative Agents’, these NPCs demonstrated believable human behaviors — scoring higher than actual humans!

Considering that there are already many popular virtual influencers on various social media channels, the implications for the future of gaming are quite interesting. There is a reasonable likelihood that sparsely populated gaming universes could be filled out with convincing AI NPCs, fully equipped with a digital footprint. While this sounds exciting at first, realizing that available AI tools have been able to bypass the infamous CAPTCHA test, there is a disconcerting level of ingenuity that we cannot overlook. It is on this principle that a petition to halt AI training has been made.

AI is already changing the way we work

Goldman Sachs reported that AI could make 300 million full-time jobs redundant, with PwC citing that a third of survey respondents have expressed anxiety relating to their job security. I do not believe this should be a cause for concern, however, at least for now. There is still time for anxious employees to experiment and upskill using AI to avoid redundancy. AI prompting is becoming a valuable work skill and will be indispensable for improving workforce efficiency.

With respect to the gaming industry, AI-driven assistance with coding can massively reduce the barrier to entry for people wanting to develop games. I have it on good authority that blockchain-focused hackathons are seeing a lot of participants using ChatGPT to expedite project builds. Lest we forget, AI is part of the Web3 stack. That is why at Mighty Bear Games, we encourage experimentation to avoid obsolescence.

For lean startup teams, AI tools can dramatically boost resource efficiency and supplement creative capacity. Any working professional can and should experiment with AI tooling, finding ways to compliment one’s own personal skills in the same way that spreadsheets make accountants’ lives easier. Examples of how game developers can do so include scripting, placeholder art, 3D rendering, and in-game props — you name it!

From my personal usage, I don’t believe AI tools are ready to replace human ingenuity — you cannot capture the inherent quirkiness of humans so easily. Available AI tools are not exactly optimized for virality, meaning the models can reproduce information and culture quite effectively but without an actual understanding of memetics.

In other words, AI tools respond extremely well to precise instructions whereas humans have been exploring and honing their creativity for longer than most can appreciate. While I quite enjoy the comical AI deep fakes that are circulating, I do not envision an AI independently managing its own social media page, hosting its own podcast, or launching an art exhibition any time soon.

Fundamentally, there is no basis upon which one should be worried about AI taking their job — not yet anyway — rather, the person who would be more likely to fill your desk is the one who has mastered how to manipulate AI to their advantage.
