In 2023, many people started to believe in the real possibility of a Matrix-like future. As technology continually advances, the public is often desensitized or unaware of innovations – even groundbreaking ones. However, the consumerization of generative artificial intelligence (AI) created a watershed moment for humanity this past year. It’s when the average person began to understand AI’s vast potential to impact how we live and work, and with this came a new level of obsession and fascination with the complex relationship between man and machine.

Like most, I watched headlines unfold speculating about how Artificial Intelligence future advancements will impact our daily lives and jobs. I’ll admit, it’s difficult not to buy into the hype when large language models achieve near-perfect scores on tests and technology leaders label AI as “smarter than humans,” uttering rhetoric like “there will come a point when no job is needed.”
People are already accustomed to daily interactions with benevolent bots and virtual assistants.
Just ask Alexa or Siri (and you likely already have). Even before generative AI’s prolific rise, the most personal parts of our lives were integrated with AI. But now with tools available that utilize user prompts to generate text and images, AI is more tangible than ever for people of all ages, education levels, and fields. This has caused excitement and fear as people think about the possibilities of this intelligent technology both assisting and replacing us.
In the Matrix series, Morpheus famously said to a human race on the brink of extinction, “We’re still here.” And we are. While generative AI certainly has the potential to be a force for global innovation, economic empowerment, and more, it’s not the world’s deus ex machina.
