Packback Labs Launches Free “Teach with GPT” Suite of Tools to Help Educators Effectively Leverage Generative AI in the Classroom

Packback Labs, the product innovation arm of AI-enabled education platform Packback, announced the launch of their free “Teach with GPT” suite of tools. Packback has been utilizing AI to bring students and instructors closer together since 2016 with their inquiry-based discussion platform, Packback Questions, and most recently, an essay coaching Platform, Packback Deep Dives.

Available now for use, the “Teach With GPT” toolkit offers instructors in K-12 and higher education settings the opportunity to leverage ChatGPT in their courses as a constructive and additive teaching and learning tool.

Packback’s mission is to harness the power of AI to help educators implement high quality pedagogy at scale, while also providing students with instant feedback, building more confident writers who are eager to share their unique voice. “Teach with GPT” includes resources to help teachers use GPT in appropriate and productive ways and help students build and master foundational skills such as critical thinking, writing, and research.

Packback’s platform has focused on providing authentic assessment and instant feedback to help students advance their own writing. Now, with “Teach with GPT”, Packback is teaching students how to work with generative AI, a technology that is already reshaping the future of work.

“Packback has been leading the use of AI in the classroom for years with the goal of bringing educators closer to their students,” said Jessica Tenuta, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Packback. “We know firsthand how well AI applications can be utilized to help students build skills in areas like critical thinking, writing, and research. GPT offers another valuable opportunity for educators to deploy AI as an effective learning tool rather than viewing it as a threat, and we believe that to best prepare students to truly thrive in a post-AI world, these technologies need to be embraced in constructive, creative coursework.”

As schools and educators grapple with the implications of students utilizing ChatGPT and other new AI technologies in their coursework, simple identification of AI-generated content isn’t enough. Teachers instead need support in how to productively address and move beyond such situations to better incorporate these technologies to achieve educational goals of improving writing, critical thinking, and motivation skills.

The free webinar in support of the launch of Teach with GPT will be hosted by Packback CTO and former academic researcher, Dr. Craig Booth, and Packback COO former K-12 teacher, Kelsey Behringer. Participants will get a live demonstration of everything Teach with GPT has to offer, and concrete tactics that will help educators productively integrate new GPT capabilities into their courses.

“Our mission at Packback is to help every student develop their unique voice, and the writing skills to express it,” said Dr. Booth, Packback’s CTO. “Packback Labs is instrumental in this pursuit, as it offers us a place to build and rapidly deploy practical tools that demonstrate some of the limitless potential of AI in the classroom. Education must constantly adapt in response to a rapidly changing world, and our goal is to empower educators with the necessary tools to nurture their students’ growth.”

Packback Labs will continue to build and release new tools as part of Teach with GPT, but the initial suite of resources at launch includes:

  • CheckGPT: Check text to see if it is AI Generated. Paste text to check if it contains AI-generated text from a tool like ChatGPT or other AI text generator, along with an easy-to-read explanation of the analysis. Gain transparency to help inform how to guide students to use tools like ChatGPT and to help encourage academic honesty.
  • “Fact-Check the AI” Assignment Generator: Generate an essay with factual errors (and answer key) for students to find and correct. Teach editing, research, and fact-checking skills by tasking students to correct an AI-generated essay with known factual errors.
  • Closed-Ended vs. Open-Ended Questions with GPT: Help students revise closed-ended questions into open-ended questions. There’s no such thing as a “bad question”…but there are certainly better questions than others for inspiring critical thinking! Use this tool to help students revise closed-ended questions into an open-ended question for better discussion and critical thinking.
  • Course-to-Career Connector: Help students find their “why”. This tool is for any instructor who has ever had a student say, “Why do I have to take this class?”. This helpful experimental tool allows instructors (or students) to input a students’ career goals and the name of your course or lesson to help find the connection between what you’re teaching and what a student’s long term goals are.
