CESAR, One of the World’s Leading RD&I Centers, Releases New Paper on How Generative A.I. Will Transform Design, Education and Work

The Generative A.I. Era is here, and it will transform everything, according to a new paper published by CESAR, a leading global innovation center and school. The advanced A.I. tools and capabilities enabled by new language learning models such as ChatGPT, introduced since 2022, are equivalent to adding a bionic brain to nearly any person or task – from augmented human creativity and A.I.-assisted design to how we interact with each other using the software that powers our world, per the new report.

In 2020, Geber Ramalho, Extraordinary Professor and Board Advisor at CESAR, led the development of PRAIA, a consortium of 15 Brazilian institutions forming a network of leading A.I. researchers, including more than 150 PhDs, that aims to speed up research on the consequences of this technological revolution. CESAR, the Recife Center for Advanced Studies and Systems based in Porto Digital, tapped this large network of renowned A.I. experts and distinguished professors to create the new research paper on GenA.I.’s disruptive impact.

“We began PRAIA – which means “beach” in Portuguese as the Port of Recife is reminiscent of other ocean-side innovation centers such as L.A., Miami and San Francisco – during the pandemic in an effort to gather intelligence and financial support from the government and private sector focused on the impact of A.I. on education and work,” said Ramalho. “We realized there would be a sea change as a result of rapid A.I. advancements – and this will require us to re-educate people for new kinds of jobs to ensure we’re able to get them back into the labor force again with different skill sets.”

Ramalho and others at CESAR and PRAIA consider the examination of how GenA.I. will disrupt how we live, teach, work, entertain ourselves, and design things including software code to be a top priority. Due to how much coding CESAR outputs, it’s an important institution to use, test, and identify the limitations and the possibilities of GenA.I. On the flip side, there’s a strong focus at CESAR on how the new technology can be used to educate people and prepare them for different jobs within GenA.I.-powered workplaces that are already quickly emerging around us.

“The main and surprising thing is the speed of change,” said ]Giordano Cabral, a distinguished professor at UFPE and Board Advisor at CESAR. “Normally, we as university lecturers, create a course once and use it for two to three years – but now, for each new semester, we have to throw everything away and reconstruct the whole program. This means that the velocity of change in the domains that we teach is so fast, it’s very difficult to keep up and rewardingly challenging.”

CESAR isn’t alone in extolling GenA.I.’s potentially transformative impact. Google CEO\Sundar Pichai, recently said “A.I. is one of the most important things humanity is working on. It’s more profound than, I don’t know, electricity or fire.” One survey conducted by Salesforce, as another example, even found that 57 percent of more than 500 senior IT leaders surveyed consider GenA.I. to be a “game changer,” with 67 percent prioritizing GenA.I. within the next 18 months.
