Many wondered why OpenAI didn’t launch ChatGPT for Windows first when it revealed its macOS desktop version at the Spring Update conference. Given that Microsoft is OpenAI’s primary investor, it stands to reason that the software giant would have priority access to any updates to ChatGPT. So now we understand. Using both on-device and cloud-based artificial intelligence models, the new Microsoft Copilot+ PC showcased at the Build conference has a plethora of functions that are tightly integrated with the operating system. Looks like OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop client, which is now Mac-only, is nothing compared to this.
To start, Microsoft is in a prime position to incorporate frontier models into its products thanks to its investment and cooperation with OpenAI. In addition, Microsoft widened its net by endorsing open models like Llama and Mistral. Simultaneously, Microsoft began distributing SLMs like Orca and Phi. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was asked at the World Economic Forum if his company had grown overly dependent on OpenAI.

Why Is It Important?
Although they’ve approached the problem from different angles, both Apple and Microsoft have been working on ways to incorporate AI capabilities into their products. Which plan will ultimately prevail remains an open question. However, Microsoft appears to be in the lead at the moment.For instance, no one had considered using Macs to run large language models (LLMs) when the M1 chip was introduced. However, the research team at Apple is constantly developing models that are compatible with its devices, and there is now a whole set of tools and a library for optimizing models to work on Apple hardware.
The issue with Apple’s strategy, though, is the immaturity of on-device generative AI. However, even though there has been tremendous advancement in the last year, we are still far from having on-device models that are trustworthy enough to execute several activities without human intervention. This is where the ChatGPT app for macOS comes in handy, filling in the gaps until either Apple finds a method to run its own models in the cloud or on-device AI becomes so advanced that cloud-based models are unnecessary.
As a result, the operating system isn’t well-integrated with the various AI technologies that were previously used. In contrast, Microsoft is laser-focused on providing state-of-the-art AI technology and then figuring out how to make them user-friendly.
