Mistral AI is a French company selling artificial intelligence products. It was founded in April 2023 by previous Meta Platforms and Google DeepMind employees.

To help developers and businesses fine-tune their generative models for specific use cases, the French AI firm Mistral has introduced additional AI model customization options, including paid subscriptions. A self-service option is the first. To help in fine-tuning its models on workstations, servers, and small data center nodes, Mistral has developed an SDK called Mistral-Finetune. Although the SDK is best used with several GPUs, it can be downsized to a single Nvidia A100 or H100 GPU for smaller models that require fine-tuning, such as the Mistral 7B, as mentioned in the readme file of the SDK’s GitHub repository. UltraChat is a dataset including 1.4 million dialogs with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Mistral, fine-tuning this dataset using Mistral-Finetune over eight H100s takes approximately thirty minutes.

Mistral has recently introduced fine-tuning services accessible through its API for developers and businesses who would rather have a managed solution. Currently, the fine-tuning services are compatible with two of Mistral’s models—Mistral Small and the aforementioned Mistral 7B—but Mistral promises that compatibility for even more of its models will be added in the next weeks.
