Industrial Cybersecurity Emerging as the Frontline for Cyberattacks

Tüv Rheinland at the Secure Summit APAC

In recent times, the number of cybersecurity-related incidents occurring around industrial systems and operational technology has been rising with well-publicized reports of malware and threat actors causing critical disruptions of systems. Industrial Cybersecurity is therefore emerging as the frontline defense to address such threats.

Urmez Daver, Vice President & Global Head Industrial Cybersecurity, TÜV Rheinland Group, was invited to present “Industrial Cybersecurity: A TIC Industry Perspective” at the Secure Summit APAC 2019 in Hong Kong on July 11, 2019. While the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry has carried the Mission of Safety, he shared practices around cybersecurity to further the objectives of safety and reliability in industrial environments.

Emerging Cybersecurity Standards will provide the right level to guidance to enterprises to manage cyber risk, and often best achieved when safety, security and privacy are engineered by design. He also shared how the worlds of Functional Safety and Cybersecurity are coming together to achieve safety objectives as well as providing cyber assurance for products, components or systems in the setting of an industrial environment. Supply Chain Risk will continue to pose a significant cyber risk especially with varying levels of cybersecurity maturity across the ecosystem and as Product development companies / System integrators embrace cybersecurity (and privacy) by design, it will enhance cyber assurance levels.

In January 2019, TÜV Rheinland published a report outlining issues around managing Industrial Cybersecurity and the challenges that organizations face. Lack of concern towards Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity was evident with 40% of respondents stating that they had never assessed the risks posed by cyberattacks on their operational technology. Only one in five companies has tailored its measures for cybersecurity to operational technology.

TÜV Rheinland also published the forecasts of its world leading cybersecurity experts for the sixth time in 2019. In addition to the changing perception of cybersecurity risks, cybersecurity trends focus on how strongly cyber threats influence technologies such as Operational Technology (OT) & The Internet of Things (IoT).
