While most data center enclosures are now state of the art, the tools used to manage and secure these assets are often outdated, as the use of simple mechanical keys and standalone electronic locks is still commonplace. By unifying enclosure management and video surveillance, data centers can see and control when, how, and by whom their racks and cabinets are accessed. Security staff and engineers can instantly verify an event without having to deploy crews and act promptly if needed. Also, access to cabinets and racks can be granted remotely and customized to the nature of the work to be done and the role of the contractor or employee. This enables data center operators to extend to their customers secure self-service management and reporting of cabinet access.
“Data centers are moving away from traditional mechanical locks as many can be opened by generic keys purchased from any hardware store, and there’s no audit trail or means for preventing sharing,” said Jordan Burnsed, Head of New Offering Introduction at Genetec. “Once you move out of that architecture into the realm of connected devices and unified systems, all kinds of possibilities open up for data-driven management and compliance. “

In addition to real-time user access control and video verification, the new enclosure management solution provides contractor and employee auditability and accountability. With it, data center operators can create custom dashboards and reports, analyze data and activity patterns, and track contract work to reconcile contractor b******. Additionally, they can help determine trends, perform searches, and run investigations for forced openings or other usage abnormalities.
Cloud Link Roadrunner is the first cybersecure, ruggedized IoT device purposely built for enclosure management solutions. It is designed with a focus on cybersecurity, management, and physical security, allowing enterprises and colocation data centers to confidently deploy capable and expandable access control capabilities across their data centers. It is available in Europe and North America and already deployed in the field.
