Denver’s Sagility Acquires Seattle’s BirchAI to Expand Healthcare Engagement Services

Seattle-based BirchAI, a startup launched in June 2020 by CEO Kevin Terrell, CTO Yinhan Liu, and COO Sumant Kawale, has announced its acquisition by Denver-based health-tech company Sagility. BirchAI, which specializes in building software to streamline customer support for healthcare companies, utilizes natural language processing to analyze phone conversations between customers and representatives, generating summary documents to enhance employee efficiency and improve patient satisfaction. Spun out of Seattle’s AI2 Incubator in 2021, BirchAI had previously raised $3.1 million in seed funding in January 2022, with investors including Radical Ventures, Flare Capital Partners, Washington Research Foundation, and AI Grant.

Microsoft launches lightweight AI model

The new version called Phi-3-mini is the first of the three small language models (SLM) to be released by the company, as it stakes its future on a technology that is expected to have a wide-ranging impact on the world and the way people work.

“Phi-3 is not slightly cheaper, it’s dramatically cheaper, we’re talking about a 10x cost difference compared to the other models out there with similar capabilities,” said Sébastien Bubeck, Microsoft’s vice president of GenAI research.

Meta is putting AI front and center in its apps, and some users are annoyed

Equifax Says 85% of Its New Models Built With AI

In announcing the company’s quarterly earnings Thursday (April 18), management noted that 70% of the new models and scores Equifax built last year were made using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), with the goal of bringing that number to 80% this year. “In the first quarter, we exceeded this goal with 85% of our new models and scores being built with Equifax AI Machine Learning,” said CEO Mark Begor. “Equifax.ai, leveraging our proprietary data Equifax Cloud And NTI capabilities is a big area of focus and execution for Equifax in 2024 and beyond.”

Amazon’s AI Magic: Streamlining Orders with Sustainable Packaging

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud-based multimodal AI algorithm can determine whether a blanket needs protective packing or whether dinner dishes need a studier box. It learns about Amazon’s changing packaging options using deep machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. Amazon experts say it usually forecasts the most efficient package choice. Amazon sells hundreds of millions of things, from camping tents to holiday sweaters, and artificial intelligence likely chooses the box or mailer that arrives on customers’ doorsteps. Each item is researched in numerous steps by the Package Decision Engine. When an item comes to the Amazon fulfillment center, a computer vision tunnel measures it, finds faults, and takes several photos. The model can also detect a bag, box, or exposed glass. The model uses natural language processing and text-based data from each item, such as name, description, price, and package dimensions. It also collects near-real-time customer feedback via Amazon’s Online Returns Center, product reviews, and other channels.
