“It is an honor to have two of our groundbreaking technologies selected as finalists for a PACE Award,” said Robert Lee, president and CEO, Continental North America. “The future of mobility relies on innovative, technical solutions to help enhance the driving experience and our outstanding team continues to rise to that challenge.”

Two innovations from Continental are selected as finalists for a PACE award: the MK C2 one box brake system, and the digital access solution CoSmA based on ultra-wideband technology.

MK C2 brake system contributes to the overall performance of a vehicle by making it more efficient, safer and scalable. Additionally, MK C2 paves the way to Future Brake Systems (FBS) and shapes the Evolution of Brake Controls to Motion Systems. It is Continental’s second-generation brake-by-wire system and will enter series production in 2022. The system integrates the master cylinder (MC), brake booster and control systems (ABS and ESC) into a single compact and lightweight module. In terms of benefits to the driver, the system offers significantly quicker buildup of autonomous braking pressure than conventional hydraulic systems, resulting in swift response when braking.

“A new future of braking systems is enabled with MK C2. It offers many advantages over existing options, especially as vehicles evolve with electrification and automation trends,” said Lutz Kuehnke, head of Safety and Motion, North America. “MK C2 specifically supports Automated Driving according to SAE Level 3 or higher. It offers added functionalities at a more attractive price level, has advantages for packaging on the vehicle and will enable a broader deployment of One-Box brake control solutions in the market.”

The digital access solution CoSmA, based on ultra-wideband from Continental, is setting a new standard for vehicle access via smartphone. The technology debuted in 2021 with the BMW iX. In the electric vehicle, access is enabled by Continental’s ultra-wideband transceiver modules to ensure a safe, secure, convenient solution for drivers. This is the first time that ultra-wideband has been integrated in a digital access solution, which not only provides an alternative to the traditional key fob, but also provides enhanced functionality for users. Drivers can access and start their vehicle completely hands-free, so they can operate their vehicle while their smartphone stays in their pocket. At the same time, vehicle owners can generate multiple keys simultaneously to share conveniently and securely with family and friends. The integration of ultra-wideband technology ensures safety by enabling precise location data of the smartphone around the car. The functionality is essential to maximize efficiency and security for drivers. For example, it prevents vehicle thieves from intercepting or extending the key signal.

The technology was developed as a result of the cross-industry Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), which brought together automotive companies, smartphone manufacturers and technology companies, such as Continental and BMW Group, to jointly drive innovation and enhance communication and integration between smartphones and vehicles.

“As we’ve witnessed, the smartphone is becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives,” said Aruna Anand, head of Architecture and Networking, North America. “By enabling our smartphone to become a digital car key, we’re further leveraging technology to make our lives safer and more convenient. Thanks to CoSmA with ultra-wideband radio standard and precise phone localization, we foster hands-free access and start of your vehicle and provide a superior level of security compared to today’s traditional wireless systems.”

Continental will vie to earn Automotive News PACE Awards for both technologies later this year following extensive virtual site visits. For complete details of the Automotive News PACE Awards,
