Microsoft to Bring Cloud Gaming Service to iOS Devices & PCs in 2021
In September, Microsoft launched its cloud gaming service Project xCloud. It uses Microsoft’s existing data centers across the globe and Xbox One console components to power cloud gaming. Users can directly stream the games onto their mobile devices. The service also came in bundled with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Subscription where gamers can play the newest titles on console and PC. In November, the technology giant also incorporated Electronic Art’s gaming subscription EA Play into the subscription. And now the company is planning to target iOS and PC gamers with its cloud gaming service.

Coming Spring of 2021, Microsoft plans to make the cloud gaming service available for iOS and PCs via the web browser and Xbox game pass app. The service was set to launch in October but was delayed due to the new rules of the Apple App store set in September. The new guideline states that each developer has to submit the game to the app store as a separate game, which would not be possible for a subscription-based model. Hence, Microsoft decided to let users play supported games via the cloud on their mobile devices through a web app with no need for a local installation. Google Stadia and Geforce Now are also following the same path when it comes to providing cloud gaming on iOS devices.

“Expanding Xbox to new players is central to our ambition of helping games and developers find an easy path to the world’s 3 billion gamers. We are doing this by embracing multiple devices and providing a consistent Xbox experience wherever you log in, whether that’s on your Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox One, Android device, or – starting in Spring 2021 – your Windows PC and iOS device from the cloud.,” Microsoft said in a blog post. The blog post also revealed Microsoft’s plan to extend the cloud gaming service platform to more countries including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is already a part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate which costs around $15 dollars per month. The service on iOS devices will only be available in its beta phase for now.
