Taking a stand on the global use of Artificial Intelligence and allied technologies, Google announced on March 26th that they will be establishing a global advisory council to keep a stringent watch on AI and other emerging technologies from an ethical perspective.
The council has been asked to submit a comprehensive report on ethics, and how it aligns with Artificial Intelligence. The council’s dignitaries include experts in technology, individuals that specialize in digital ethics and most importantly, professionals in public policy. Kent Walker, Google’s Senior Vice President for Global Affairs, made this announcement at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Conference.

The council’s core function is to recommend ethical and legal aspects of AI to companies such as Google and other AI development enterprises. It may be noted that Google already has internal AI policies, which strictly prohibit the company from producing weapons influenced by AI.
Speaking at the MIT Technology Review event in San Francisco, Walker said, “We want to have the most informed and thoughtful conversations we can. We want to sit down with the council and see what agenda they want to set.”

- Joanna Bryson – An associate professor in computing at the University of Bath
- William J. Burns – A former US deputy secretary of state.
- Dyan Gibbens – Chief executive of Houston-based drone startup Trumbull
We believe Google has made the right decision. Artificial Intelligence as a technology has created mixed feelings worldwide. While enterprises are fairly excited about it, its general sentiment in the public often comes with fear and skepticism. Google, one of the most loved brands in the world, will like to keep up its user sentiment. A council of this nature only tells the world that the company wants to be responsible for mysterious technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
