How AI-Driven Strategies Can Fuel Global Business Expansion

By: Pamela Ghosal, Director, Brand & Communications, Phrase

Successful global enterprises are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced market penetration and cultural agility. In particular, large language models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful tools in expanding an organization’s global footprint by offering numerous applications that enhance efficiency, customer engagement, and market understanding.

A recent global survey conducted by Censuswide for Phrase, involving 2,000 business leaders, found that the vast majority (90 percent) of businesses are planning to expand into new markets that operate in different languages within the next five years. A similar majority (87 percent) of leaders acknowledge that investing in translation and localization has already contributed to the successful expansion of their business in new markets.

The matter of speed does weigh on leaders’ minds, though. Three-quarters (76 percent) of global business leaders say that speed to market will improve their capacity to expand into new regions faster and more effectively. Notably, a similar percentage of global leaders (73 percent) say they believe in the potential of AI and LLMs and are excited by the prospect of AI to drive business expansion. (Enthusiasm for AI and LLMs is even higher in the U.S., where 93 percent of leaders are excited by the prospects of these technologies when it comes to expanding their businesses.)

Let’s look at the numerous ways AI and LLMs are being employed today to expand global businesses and how enterprise leaders can make the most of their applications.

Breaking Down Language Barriers

One of the most significant challenges in global expansion is communication across different languages. LLMs, with their advanced natural language processing (NLP) capabilities, can bridge this gap effectively. Businesses can use LLMs for rapid (and even real-time) translation services, ensuring accurate and culturally appropriate communication with customers and partners worldwide. Beyond traditional translation, LLMs can understand context, idioms, and regional dialects, providing translations that resonate better with local audiences.

Enhancing Customer Support

Providing excellent customer support in multiple languages is crucial for global businesses. LLMs can be integrated into chatbots and virtual assistants to offer 24/7 multilingual support. These AI-driven solutions can handle a wide range of customer queries, from simple FAQs to complex troubleshooting, in the customer’s native language. Furthermore, AI-powered machine translation (MT) can provide real-time translations to customer support teams without the need to hire local language speakers. This not only improves customer satisfaction but also reduces the burden on human support teams, allowing them to focus on more strategic tasks.

Personalized Marketing and Content Creation

For a stronger impact, marketing strategies need to be tailored to resonate with different markets. LLMs enhance personalized marketing and content creation by analyzing customer data to segment audiences and generate tailored messages. They predict future behaviour, enabling targeted strategies which business can use to create personalized marketing campaigns that resonate with a diverse audience. Additionally,  LLMs can create high-quality, SEO-optimized multilingual content, including dynamic, user-responsive material. This approach will improve engagement within each target market.

Facilitating Compliance and Risk Management

Operating in multiple countries requires adherence to diverse regulatory environments. AI and LLMs can assist businesses in understanding and complying with local laws and regulations. These models can analyze legal documents, monitor regulatory updates, and even predict potential compliance issues based on historical data. This proactive approach helps businesses avoid legal pitfalls and ensure smooth operations in new markets.

As businesses strive to expand their global presence, the role of AI, particularly large language models, becomes increasingly vital. These models offer a range of applications that enhance communication, customer support, marketing, and operational efficiency. By harnessing the power of AI and LLMs, businesses can navigate the complexities of global markets more effectively. The future of global business expansion lies in the seamless integration of AI-driven localization technologies that enable companies to connect with diverse audiences and thrive in the global marketplace.
