Future Tech Update: BAE Systems Expands Tactical Radio Systems Portfolio

Today, BAE Systems has announced its completion of Airborne Tactical Radios. The world’s most advanced FutureTech manufacturing company will expand its tactical battle-focused tactical electronic and radio signal systems portfolio with Airborne Radios. The acquisition deal worth $275 million, was signed with Raytheon Technologies Corporation in January 2020.

In October 2014, BAE Systems had acquired Perimeter Internetworking Corp., which traded as SilverSky, for $232 Million.

In the same year, in December, it acquired, Eclipse Electronic Systems, Inc., for cash consideration of approximately $28 Million, to further grow its battle-ready portfolio of highly-advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) products.

Airborne Radios is a leading provider of airborne tactical radio solutions. It currently designs, manufactures, and supplies a broad range of mission-critical communication systems to the US Department of Defense, in addition to providing tactical support to allied governments and large defense aircraft manufacturers. Radios’ systems provide a wide range of state of the art anti-jamming, multi-band, multi-channel, and encryption capabilities, which are essential to secure communication.

At the time of announcing the Airborne Radios acquisition, BAE Systems had announced that it will buy out Collins Aerospace’s Military Global Positioning System business (“GPS business”) for $1.925 Billion.

At the time of these announcements, Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems had said:

“These proposed acquisitions present a unique opportunity to add high quality, technology-focused businesses to our Electronics Systems sector. It’s rare that two businesses of this quality, with such strong growth prospects and close fit to our portfolio, become available.”

Charles added, “The strategic and financial rationale is strong and these proposed acquisitions, which are focused on areas of highest priority defense spending, will further enhance the Group’s opportunity for continued growth in Electronic Systems. We look forward to welcoming the employees of the two businesses to the Company, as we work together to help drive our business forward successfully.”

Over its long history of innovation, the Radios business has developed valuable intellectual property in the secure radio communications domain resulting in a significant installed base of radios across a number of military airborne platforms in allied countries.

By bringing in Raytheon Radios business, BAE Systems will exponentially improve the current portfolio of Secured Communication technologies, which greatly underpins its long-term growth potential.
