Supermicro understood early on that a robust cloud platform was necessary to provide network operators with an environment for developing applications and a distributed edge. This is particularly important because the functions of the 5G network will be closely linked and powered by public clouds. Supermicro’s next generation dual processor CloudDC servers offer multiple storage options in 1U and 2U servers, OCP 3.0 compliant dual AIOM slots for up to four 100 GbE ports, support for Open BMC, a fully hybrid back panel design supporting SATA3, SAS3 or NVMe storage drives, and a streamlined architecture optimized for very large scale environments.

“With its already strong position in the 5G infrastructure and its initial launch of CloudDC servers, Supermicro provides customers with next generation optimized systems from the edge to the cloud,” said Charles Liang , president and CEO of Supermicro. “This combination demonstrates Supermicro’s continued focus on x86 systems and its support for open source solutions compliant with the NFV (network functions virtualization) standard using NEBS and a validated telecommunications software standard, activated by our Building Block Solutions ® for servers and storage. ”

Supermicro’s CloudDC servers offer exceptional value for a multitude of use cases. For the private cloud, CloudDC servers have flexible storage and expansion, NVMe over Fabrics, rapid deployment, easy maintenance and a high degree of extensibility. In the 5G / telco space, CloudDC systems are designed to be NEBS level 3 compatible, support O-RAN virtualized network elements such as UD, UC and core, and accommodate FPGA accelerator cards. The platform supports up to four GPU accelerator cards and can process training and inference from deep learning, data analysis, graphics and high performance computing.
At the start of the year, Supermicro announced its first Outdoor Edge Systems on the market. These IP65-based servers are optimized for RAN 5G, AI inference, and other intelligent edge-based applications. These new systems support the industry’s transition to open source software and x86 disaggregated hardware and are ideal for hostile outdoor environments.
