Automattic Is Acquiring Texts

For $50 million, Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, Pocket Casts, and several other prominent web assets, has acquired a new type of startup: the universal messaging software Texts.
All of your messaging applications may be accessed through Texts. You can access your many messaging accounts in one convenient location, including WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, iMessage, and more. (Beeper is another app that serves a similar function.) The app’s primary function is to consolidate several inboxes into a single interface, though it provides a few extra features, such as AI-generated answers and summaries.

Introduce more open protocols
As for the future of messaging standards, Mullenweg is optimistic about projects like Matrix, which provides a decentralized and open-source messaging network. He is currently considering how Texts may be used to gradually introduce more open protocols.

As more people move away from using public-first social networks, Mullenweg and Automattic believe messaging has a bright future. Mullenweg is certain that chat can be used to create a profitable business, even though few others have succeeded in doing so.
