OpenAI Launches ChatGPT & Whisper APIs, Developers Can Now Build ChatGPT into Their Apps
ChatGPT is not a massive hit; it can now officially be called the ‘Holy Grail’ of the tech world. The AI developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI has been making headlines ever since it was launched in November last year. Its popularity is such, that as per data in December, this free text-generating chatbot crossed 100 million monthly active users!
From giving users ideas on how to make money using ChatGPT to co-authoring a scientific paper, ChatGPT’s ubiquitous influence keeps getting finer and more sophisticated.
While OpenAI has been exploring various ideas and business plans like its premium service, ChatGPT Plus launched in February, to monetize on ChatGPT, an API was always a part of the future plan. OpenAI just launched an API that will empower all business owners to integrate ChatGPT into their websites, products, apps, and services.

OpenAI launched an API for ChatGPT and announced it on Twitter:
ChatGPT and Whisper are now available through our API (plus developer policy updates). We ❤️ developers: https://t.co/vpoyxZ7XnD

OpenAI’s blog mentions that ChatGPT and Whisper models were available on their newly launched API, enabling developers to access innovative language and speech-to-text capabilities.
The ChatGPT API is powered by gpt-3.5-turbo, the same behind the very popular ChatGPT. Priced at $0.002 per 1k tokens, it makes it 10 times cheaper than the existing GPT-3.5 models. this particular can be used for other nonchat applications. Some of the early adopters include Quizlet, Instacart, and Shopify among others.
Greg Brockman, the president, chairman, and also one of the co-founders of OpenAI categorically mentioned the availability of ChatGPT API along with the release of Whisper of API:
ChatGPT API now available, 10% the price of our flagship language model & matching/better at any pretty much any task (not just chat).
Also released Whisper API & greatly improved our developer policies in response to feedback. We ❤️ developers: https://t.co/nZVys965Nw

Whisper API
In September 2022, OpenAI unveiled Whisper, a speech-to-text model, and priced it at $0.006 per minute. Its automatic speech recognition system accepts files in different formats including M4A, MP3, MP4, and WEBM.
What sets Whisper apart from the rest is that it was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual and “multitask” data extracted from the web. This can enable the API to perform better by recognizing unique accents, and background noise.
While Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI stated that ChatGPT has a glorious roadmap planned but only bottlenecked by engineering.
ChatGPT has an ambitious roadmap and is bottlenecked by engineering. pretty cool stuff is in the pipeline!
want to be stressed, watch some GPUs melt, and have a fun time? good at doing impossible things?

He further stated that ChatGPT the data submitted to the API will not be used for training.

90% Cost-Reduction for the Benefit of API Users
OpenAI states that by implementing a series of system-wide optimizations, the brand has achieved a 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December; and they are all set to pass on those savings to the prospective API users.
Additionally, developers can also use OpenAI’s open-source Whisper large-v2 model in the API with much faster and cost-effective results.

ChatGPT API users can expect continuous model improvements and the option to choose a dedicated capacity for deeper control over the models. OpenAI assures that they have taken feedback from developers seriously and used it to fine-tune the API terms of service to accommodate their needs.
