MS&AD to Deploy Tractable’s AI in Japan to Accelerate Recovery of Insurance Claims

One of the largest property and casualty insurers, MA&AD has announced the intention of using Tractable’s AI to speed up the processes regarding auto claims and recovery for policyholders. Tractable’s AI works via computer vision and analyzes car damage as seen from human vision to determine the extent of the damage. 

The solution will be deployed across MS&AD’s both subsidiaries Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance. It will be used for hundreds of thousands of auto claims, accelerating the overall two weeks per claim process. It will also lead to the wide-scale and mass adoption of AI across MS&AD’s operations.

MS&AD operates across 40 countries with its core units MSI and ADI having auto operations in Asia, the US, and Europe.

Tractable’s AI is built upon the photos and human repair decisions across millions of recorded historical accidents. Through all such images and experiences, the  AI has learned to understand the damage to any passenger car across Europe, Asia, and the US. It has been processed over $1 billion in auto claims for the world’s biggest insurers, including Ageas UK. Covéa, and Talanx-Warta, the largest and second-largest auto insurer in French and Poland respectively. 

Keiji Goto, GM for Technical Support, Claims Division at MSI, said: “By applying Tractable’s market-leading AI, we will be able to solve long-standing challenges to the claims cycle, such as how to accelerate supervisor approval of work carried out by our appraisers. We’re excited by the standard of the AI and its capacity to help us make better, faster decisions for our customers.”

Tadashi Yamanaka, Staff GM, Claims Administration Department at ADI, said: “Tractable’s AI will change how insurance claims are processed. As a result, drivers across Japan will see a faster response time to their claims, proving ADI’s commitment to delivering the best possible service.”

In the UK, in 2018, insurance companies recorded over 20.7 billion euros in gross written motor insurance premiums. The average claim for bodily injury was 10.5 thousand British Pounds. However, 54 thousand claims were also detected as fraudulent. 

As such, time is frequently lost in accessing the damage of the vehicle which may occur multiple times throughout the claims. Hence, AI in the auto insurance industry can assist in fast insurance claims. 

Other than the insurance claim, Insurify, an American Insurance comparison website utilized its intelligent virtual agent Evia to compare real-time quotes from carriers in various zip codes and provide coverage recommendations. 

Lloyd, in its 2018 Emerging Risk Report, highlighted how the growth of IoT will help the insurance industry with better risk management, avoiding losses, enabling proactive monitoring. 

McKinsey also highlights a potential annual value of around $1.1 trillion if AI is deployed in the insurance industry. It will be beneficial to multiple areas including Sales and Marketing, Risk, and Operations.
